NEW DELHI: Residents of the Narmada-Saraswati housing complex in Vasant Kunj staged a protest on Friday against the proposed development of a Local Shopping Centre (LSC) on a park site, alleging that the move would deprive hundreds of families of their only sizeable recreational space.The protest, organised by the Narmada-Saraswati RWA, included a candle march, with residents, including women and children, raising slogans and demanding that the park be protected.

Narmada RWA president Vikram Gahlot alleged that the park, spread over around 2,000 square metres, was being earmarked for an LSC.“Our objection is not against shopping facilities, but against taking away the only sizeable park available to the residents,” Gahlot said.He alleged that the proposed development was contrary to provisions of the Delhi Master Plan and questioned the need for two shopping centres in the area.

The RWA said that excavation had recently begun at the site. According to Gahlot, residents, including a large number of women, gathered at the spot and stopped the excavation work after a JCB arrived.“Only a small portion was excavated before residents intervened,” he claimed.The residents have also raised concerns over the distinction between the existing Convenience Shopping Centre (CSC) and the proposed Local Shopping Centre (LSC).

Gahlot said that the existing shopping facility has remained largely non-functional for years and questioned the need for another commercial facility in the residential complex.Residents said they have also approached the Lieutenant Governor, DDA officials, the local MP and MLA, the PMO over their concerns.

The RWA has threatened to intensify the agitation and said residents plan to begin a hunger strike on Sunday if their demands are not addressed.DDA was contacted for its response to the residents’ allegations regarding the proposed LSC, the status of the park and the ongoing construction activity. No response was received.
