Hyderabad: The Telangana BJP on Wednesday submitted a memorandum to governor Shiv Pratap Shukla, urging him to direct assembly speaker Gaddam Prasad Kumar to suspend MIM MLAs from the House for allegedly disrespecting ‘Vande Mataram’ by walking out during its recitation in the assembly. The incident took place during the governor’s budget speech. In the two-page memorandum, the BJP stated that the incident took place on the first day of the assembly session, when members of the MIM walked out while Vande Mataram was being recited in the House. In the memorandum, the BJP said that the Union home ministry had recently mandated the celebration of 150 years of the song’s origin. “Vande Mataram inspired millions of youth and citizens in their fight against British rule during India’s freedom struggle. Vande Mataram was a widely used slogan during those days,” the party said in the memorandum. The party described the act as contemptuous, saying it amounted to an insult to the nation and demonstrated disregard for national symbols. It added that the song played a historic role in India’s freedom struggle and holds deep national significance. “In view of the unwarranted conduct of the MIM members, the BJP requests that the speaker of Telangana assembly take all appropriate action, including dismemberment of those MIM MLAs, who walked out of the assembly when Vande Mataram was being recited,” the party BJP said in the memorandum. It further stated that such action would serve as an example to those who, in its view, fail to show due respect to national symbols and the national song.
