Amritsar: Officiating jathedar of Akal Takht, Giani Kuldeep Singh Gargajj, condemned the recent violence at two universities as “unfortunate” and “contrary to Punjab’s character”.The jathedar said Punjab has a long history of student movements and protests, but such agitations have traditionally not involved the kind of vandalism, looting and destruction witnessed recently. He said Punjabi students had never resorted to vandalising vehicles or setting educational institutions on fire during their protests.“This is not Punjab’s character,” he said, stressing that the incidents raised questions about the forces and persons responsible for creating such an atmosphere in the state.Giani Gargajj said the incidents should be thoroughly investigated to establish who was behind the violence and whether any elements were deliberately trying to “disturb the peaceful environment in Punjab”. He urged the universities to take steps to restore peace and ensure that campuses remain safe for students and staff.
