The Uttarakhand government rolled out a financial assistance scheme aimed at providing housing relief to the families of soldiers who have made the ultimate sacrifice, as well as war-disabled veterans trying to rebuild their lives.The “Housing Assistance Grant” scheme is being implemented by the State Sainik Board under the Sainik Welfare Department. It provides financial support to widows and dependents of soldiers martyred in wars and border clashes, along with war-disabled retired soldiers, for construction or repair of a house.Under the scheme, eligible beneficiaries are given a one-time grant of Rs 2 lakh during their lifetime, strictly for house construction or renovation. The support is designed to strengthen long-term housing security for military families and ex-servicemen.The benefit can be availed only once in a lifetime, and applicants must be residents of Uttarakhand. Eligible categories include widows or dependents of martyrs, as well as war-disabled retired soldiers.Understanding the eligibility criteria in advance can help avoid delays or confusion during the application process.Application process:Beneficiaries must apply offline through the concerned District Sainik Welfare Office. After document verification and confirmation of eligibility, the sanctioned amount is transferred directly to the beneficiary’s bank account under the Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) system.Documents required:1. Attested copy of the Battle Casualty Report of the martyr soldier or war-disabled retired soldier2. Attested copy of the Part-II Order of Battle Casualty3. Certificate of Dependents4. Building construction or repair estimate issued by a Junior or Assistant Engineer5. Certificate from the District Sainik Welfare Officer confirming that no residential assistance has been previously availed from the state governmentThe Housing Assistance Grant scheme is part of Uttarakhand’s wider welfare measures for ex-servicemen and the families of soldiers who lost their lives in service. Through this initiative, the state aims to provide financial support for housing needs and extend assistance to those who have borne the costs of military service and sacrifice.
