The U.S. Army is set to end the specialist drone-and-robot mission of the 3rd Battalion, 504th Parachute Infantry Regiment, a Europe-based experimental formation created to adapt lessons from the Ukraine war. After completing the Saber Junction exercise in Germany, the roughly 600-soldier battalion will submit its findings for future Army experimentation and return to its primary role as a conventional airborne infantry unit under a “back-to-basics” approach directed by acting Army Chief of Staff Gen. Christopher LaNeve. The decision does not mean the Army is abandoning drones, but it has fuelled debate over whether a service-wide integration model can retain the specialised expertise developed by a dedicated unit as cheap drones, loitering munitions and ground robots reshape modern battlefields.
