Kanpur: Uproar and heated exchanges once again marred the Kanpur Municipal Corporation (KMC) working committee meeting on Monday, with corporators raising issues ranging from the dissolution of the Mangal Bhawan committee and privatisation of garbage lifting to defunct streetlights and pending development works in wards. The meeting, scheduled for 2pm, began with corporators raising the issues and seeking answers from municipal commissioner. The commissioner, however, said he would respond only to matters covered under the resolutions listed on the agenda and sought time to reply to issues raised outside it.Mayor Pramila Pandey objected to the approach, alleging that issues related to city development were repeatedly being brushed aside. She also questioned the functioning of civic officials and alleged a lack of transparency in several matters, saying several KMC projects remained pending.During the heated exchanges, corporator Abhinav Shukla questioned the commissioner on why the working committee’s approval had not been sought before dissolving the Mangal Bhawan committee. The commissioner reiterated that he would answer only questions related to the proposed resolutions and later appealed to corporators against making personal remarks. The functioning of streetlights also came under discussion. Pandey claimed that more than 20,000 streetlights across the city were non-functional. The commissioner directed officials to repair all defunct lights before Diwali and install new ones wherever required.Pandey also defended the inclusion of her son Amit Pandey in the Mangal Bhawan committee, saying he had played a significant role in construction of the facility. She said the venue charged only Rs 11,000 for a marriage booking and that more than 100 marriages had already been solemnised there. After around two hours of arguments and chaos, the meeting was suspended.Later, Pandey said all 15 resolutions listed on the agenda had been passed, several of which related to renaming roads and parks.Talking to media persons, she said another working committee meeting had been convened for October 7 to resolve the issues and ensure proper discussion of matters related to the city’s development. She said only development-related issues would be taken up at the meeting.
