BALLIA: A 30-year-old man and his mother were arrested in UP’s Ballia in connection with the alleged dowry death of his 28-year-old wife, news agency PTI said on Sunday.The accused, identified as Rakesh Kumar Yadav and his mother Isravati Devi, 56, were arrested near Sabdalpur village on Saturday, Circle Officer (CO), Rasra, Rajnish Kumar Yadav said. They were sent to jail after the completion of legal formalities, while efforts are underway to arrest the other accused.The case was registered at Bhimpura police station on Thursday following a complaint by Ajit Kumar Yadav of Govindpur village. The complaint named Rakesh, a resident of Yadav Nagar Shahpur, along with his brother Nitish, father Kamlesh and mother Isravati.According to the FIR, Goldi married Rakesh on April 29, 2021. Her in-laws allegedly harassed her physically and mentally and taunted her over insufficient dowry after the marriage.Police said the family continued to demand dowry despite receiving Rs 3 lakh in cash from Goldi’s family for the purchase of a four-wheeler.On Wednesday, a day before her death, Goldi allegedly called her maternal family and told them that her in-laws were planning to kill her. Police said she was allegedly killed by her in-laws during the intervening night of Wednesday and Thursday.CO Rajnish said police reached the spot after receiving information about the incident on Thursday morning and sent Goldi’s body for a post-mortem examination.A case has been registered under Sections 85 (husband or relative of husband of a woman subjecting her to cruelty) and 80(2) (dowry death) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), along with provisions of the Dowry Prohibition Act, police said.Further legal action is being taken in the matter.
