Patna: Bihar State Pollution Control Board (BSPCB) is taking steps to close two industrial units in Darbhanga and Patna after joint inspections found serious violations involving untreated effluent discharge.According to an official BSPCB communique issued on Friday, a joint team of BSPCB and IIT Kharagpur inspected Mithila Milk Producers Cooperative Union Ltd in Darbhanga this year and found its effluent treatment plant (ETP) was not functioning properly. Untreated effluent was being bypassed and reverse-pumped into a borewell, which the board termed a serious violation.The BSPCB said the unit had failed to comply with the conditions of consent granted by the board and violated provisions of the Water (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act, 1974. It is taking action to close the unit under the relevant provisions.In a separate inspection, a joint BSPCB-IIT Kharagpur team found the ETP at Harilal Ventures Pvt Ltd in Pataliputra Industrial Area, Patna, was not operational. Untreated effluent was being bypassed and discharged into a nearby drain.The board said action was also being taken to close the Patna unit under the Water Act to prevent adverse environmental impact.According to the BSPCB release, CPCB classifies units discharging over 100 kg of BOD a day and/or handling hazardous substances as highly polluting industries.
