By Jaden ThomasMADURAI: The Union cabinet chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday approved a proposal to declare Madurai airport as an international airport. The move comes a day before the PM’s visit to Tamil Nadu.Madurai airport director P Muthu Kumar told reporters that declaring the airport here as an international one would pave the way for Madurai to become a major hub in Tamil Nadu for air travel. The airport would be able to attract international airlines to operate with more choices to the travelling public and ensure reduced competitive fares for international travel. This would also increase the number of passengers travelling to and fro Madurai. He said this marked a significant step towards enhancing international connectivity, providing seamless travel experience and supporting the growth of regional, as well as international air traffic. This would provide flexibility to airlines for flights of long-haul routes, non-scheduled operators, medical flights and general aviation for efficient planning of aircraft operations. “Airlines can also plan bases at Madurai airport. This will also enable effective use of airport infrastructure and resources,” he added.Muthu Kumar said a night parking facility is available at Madurai airport. The Airports Authority of India has proposed expansion of the existing terminal building, car parking, apron and other associated city side and airside infrastructure at the airport, he added.
