Chennai: Tamil Nadu Power Generation Corporation Limited (TNPGCL) is targeting commercial operation of the first unit of the 2×660MW Udangudi supercritical thermal power project by June, after chief minister M K Stalin inaugurated power generation from Unit-1 of the plant in Udangudi on Friday .The 13,077-crore project, located in Tuticorin district, began generating around 400MW of infirm power after coal synchronisation in Feb. The utility plans to ramp up output to its full 660MW capacity in the coming weeks as part of the process leading to commercial commissioning. “We will run the plant to generate power at its full capacity of 660MW from next week and address the glitches we come across before attempting commercial operation and running the plant non-stop for 72 hours at its full load — by June,” said TNPGCL managing director M Govinda Rao.Generation from the plant will help meet the surging power demand during summer. “It was due to the dedication of all the teams involved that we were able to launch it ahead of summer,” added the official.Construction of the Udangudi project began in 2018 and includes a dedicated coal jetty.
