Bengaluru: Two-wheelers and passenger autorickshaws will be barred round the clock on the Electronics City Elevated Corridor from Sept 11, on International Airport Road Elevated Corridor from Sept 4. This comes as part of a Bengaluru Traffic Police initiative to improve road safety and ease congestion on flyovers.The restrictions, announced Sunday, will cover five flyovers/elevated corridors and different categories of goods vehicles, autos and two-wheelers. The measures are being introduced on a trial basis, with the traffic police to assess their impact before deciding on further action.Joint commissioner of police (Traffic) Karthik Reddy told TOI the restrictions followed a detailed study based on the following considerations: slow-moving traffic by goods vehicles and autorickshaws, vehicle breakdown and accidents (fatal and non-fatal), especially involving two-wheelers.The Electronics City Elevated Corridor will see the widest restrictions. All heavy, medium and light goods vehicles will be prohibited between 6am and 10pm, while two-wheelers, passenger autorickshaws and three-wheeler goods autorickshaws will be banned throughout the day.Reddy said fatal accidents were higher on the Electronics City flyover compared with other flyovers, though the exact figures were not immediately available.On Airport Road Elevated Corridor, from Sanjeevnagar Cross to Vidyashilp Junction, two-wheelers and autorickshaws will be prohibited 24 hours a day. Goods vehicles of all categories will be restricted between 6am and 10pm.The Peenya Elevated Corridor will also prohibit passenger autorickshaws and three-wheeler goods autorickshaws round the clock. Heavy and medium goods vehicles will be restricted from 7am to 11am and 4pm to 10pm.On the BGS Flyover on Mysuru Road, heavy goods vehicles will be banned throughout the day, while other goods vehicles, including three-wheeler goods autos, will face restrictions during the same peak-hour periods. The Double-Decker Flyover between Silk Board and Ragigudda will prohibit heavy goods vehicles 24 hours a day.Reddy said vehicle breakdowns, particularly involving goods-carrying vehicles, were another concern across the flyovers. “All flyovers witness breakdown of vehicles, especially goods-carrying vehicles. So, we have imposed these restrictions on a trial basis. Based on the results, we will take further decisions,” he said.The traffic police said the review also considered flyover design and width, accident severity, congestion at entry and exit points, emergency traffic management, and the safety of pedestrians and two-wheeler riders.The restrictions on the BGS Flyover, Peenya Elevated Corridor, Double-Decker Flyover and International Airport Road Elevated Corridor will come into effect from Sept 4, with those on the Electronics City corridor beginning Sept 11.
