Nagpur: Thousands of aspirants from Vidarbha and Marathwada will no longer have to travel to Mumbai to appear for Maharashtra Public Service Commission’s (MPSC) screening exams for various professor-level posts. The commission has now made exam centres available in Nagpur, Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, Amravati and Pune, besides Mumbai.The MPSC had announced screening examinations for around 42 subjects under various advertisements for recruitment to professorial cadres. Initially, the examinations were largely scheduled only in Mumbai, forcing candidates from districts such as Bhandara, Gondia, Gadchiroli and Chandrapur, as well as other parts of Vidarbha and Marathwada, to undertake a long and expensive journey for an examination lasting just an hour.The decision is expected to reduce travel time and expenses of candidates, besides sparing them difficulties of travelling during monsoon.The Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM) student wing had demanded additional examination centres for Vidarbha and Marathwada in a representation submitted to Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on July 6. The delegation, led by BJYM student wing convener Shantanu Jhade under guidance of BJYM president Sachin Karare, sought centres in Nagpur and Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar. City president Dayashankar Tiwari subsequently followed up on the demand.Students have welcomed the MPSC’s decision, saying the move will significantly reduce the financial, physical and mental burden on candidates from the two regions.
