Rajkot: Gir Somnath police arrested two men for several cheating cases across the state where citizens at ATMs were defrauded using fudged UPI transaction screenshots.An FIR was registered on Wednesday by a fruit vendor, Ajaj Shekh, 30, stating that on March 23 at an ATM near Una bus station, he and his friend Rahim had gone to deposit Rs 15,000.According to the complaint, a man approached them inside the ATM booth, saying he was in urgent need of cash. To gain their trust, he offered to transfer the same amount to them and showed them a fake Google Pay transaction receipt on his phone. Believing his claim, the victims handed over the cash.The accused, who had an accomplice waiting outside on a motorcycle, then fled. The very evening, another acquaintance of the complainant, Dipen Kambliya, was cheated of Rs 5,000 using the identical modus operandi.Acting on specific intelligence, Una police arrested two suspects — Sandip Alagiya (29) and Dhruvdeep Mehta (26), both residents of Amreli district.Police recovered Rs 20,000 in cash, high-end mobile phones used in the fraud and a motorcycle.Investigators said Alagiya has a long criminal history, with cases registered in Amreli city, Amreli taluka, Bagasara and Rajula. During interrogation, the duo allegedly confessed to running a scam targeting ATM users by showing them fabricated digital payment screenshots to take their cash and flee.Police said the accused had been operating for the seven to eight months, committing similar offences in Bagasara (Rs 11,500), Dhari (Rs 10,000), Dhasa (Rs 5,000), Surat (Rs 11,000) and Rajkot’s Hospital Chowk (Rs 25,000), taking their total amount defrauded to over Rs 62,000.
