Thiruvananthapuram: Two men were taken into custody by Valiyathura police on Tuesday in connection with the assault of a young woman and her friend at Shanghumugham Beach early on Monday.The accused were identified as Rahees, 27, of Beemapally, and Hasan, 24, of Sadam Nagar, Puthenvalappu. According to the police, the incident occurred around 4.30am on Monday, when the woman and her friend were sitting at the beach. The duo allegedly attacked the victims, forcibly snatched the woman’s bag and destroyed the belongings inside. Police said the accused also behaved in an inappropriate and offensive manner towards the woman during the incident, adding to the gravity of the crime. Following a complaint, Valiyathura police launched an investigation and apprehended the suspects. It is learnt that the first accused, Rahees, is already listed in the rowdy history sheet of Poonthura police station, indicating prior involvement in criminal activities. The arrested individuals were produced before a local court, which remanded them in judicial custody. Police officers said further investigation is under way to determine whether more persons were involved in the attack and to gather additional evidence in the case.
