Mohali: A local court sentenced two persons to seven-year rigorous imprisonment in a case of attempted murder stemming from a violent clash over a volleyball game in Mauli Baidwan village, Sohana. The court held the accused guilty under Section 307 (attempt to murder) of the IPC and also awarded one year imprisonment under relevant sections of the IPC.Besides, the court imposed a fine of Rs 10,000 on the convicts. In case of non-payment, they will have to undergo additional six months’ imprisonment.The incident dates back to Dec 2019. Complainant Sukhjit Singh, a resident of Mauli Baidwan, told the police that he went to the village ground in the evening to play volleyball with friends. During the game, he got into an argument with another youth over picking up the ball. Though the matter was temporarily settled, the situation escalated later.When Sukhjit Singh was on his way home with friends, the accused — identified as Amandeep Singh and Varinder Singh — along with four to five associates, arrived in a vehicle and attacked him with sticks. His friends were also assaulted when they tried to intervene. The accused fled from the spot after the attack, following which the injured was rushed to hospital. A case of attempt to murder and other relevant sections was subsequently registered against the accused. After examining the evidence and hearing arguments, the court pronounced the sentence, holding the accused guilty of the charges. BOX NDPS Case: Accused gets 10-year jail term, Rs 1 lakh fine In a separate case, the court of additional district and sessions judge Nitika Verma convicted Chanpreet Singh alias Channi, a resident of Ludhiana, under the NDPS Act and sentenced him to 10 years’ rigorous imprisonment, along with a fine of Rs 1 lakh. As per the prosecution, a police team led by ASI Gurpartap Singh received secret information about the involvement of the accused in narcotics and vehicle theft. A naka was set up near Khanpur on June 17, 2021. The accused was intercepted while travelling in a Brezza car from Ludhiana towards Mohali. During a search, narcotics and intoxicant tablets were recovered from the dashboard of the vehicle. The car was also suspected to be stolen. A case was registered at City Kharar police station, following which the accused was arrested and later convicted by the court. MSID:: 129776749 413 |
