Ahmedabad: The Air Intelligence Unit (AIU) of the customs department at Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International (SVPI) Airport intercepted a man and a woman with about over $70,000 in cash (about Rs 63 lakh). “On specific intelligence, officers of AIU Ahmedabad intercepted a male and a female passenger departing for Bangkok on March 6. Upon examination of their baggage and a personal search, USD 35,300 and USD 35,040 were recovered from their trolley bags,” mentioned a release by the department.
The foreign currency, which is about Rs 63.44 lakh, was seized under the provisions of the Customs Act, 1962, FEMA, 1999, and the Foreign Exchange Management (Export and Import of Currency) Regulations, officials said.This was the second instance of seizure of US currency at the international airport in over the past month. A passenger returning from Dubai was caught on Feb 13 with $28,800. The notes were recovered from a trolley bag, a carry bag, and the pocket of his trousers.
