Prayagraj: The Civil Lines police have registered two FIRs, including charges of attempt to murder, in connection with the alleged vandalism of two SUVs during Saturday’s student protest, as the district administration and police intensified efforts to identify those involved in violence and damage to public and private property through CCTV footage and other evidence.The district administration and police took serious cognisance of the violence and vandalism reported during Saturday’s massive protest and have begun the process of identifying those allegedly involved in damaging public and private property.Officials said CCTV footage and other available evidence are being examined to establish the identities of those responsible, following which strict legal action will be initiated against them.

The action comes a day after thousands of students and youths gathered along MG Road between All Saints Cathedral and Subhash Crossing to protest against the NEET paper leak, alleged irregularities in competitive examinations and recruitment issues.Of the two FIRs filed on Sunday, the first was lodged by Rohit Dwivedi, son of former Banda MP Ramesh Chandra Dwivedi, who alleged that a mob damaged his Fortuner and attempted to kill his driver, Nagesh Singh. In his complaint, Rohit said an unruly mob vandalised his vehicle during the protest.The second FIR was lodged by Rewa BJP functionary Prashant Pathak, a resident of Chakghat in Madhya Pradesh. He alleged that his Fortuner, bearing a BJP flag and board, was attacked near Subhash Crossing. According to his complaint, protesters raised slogans that BJP workers should not be allowed to leave alive, smashed the vehicle’s windows and damaged other parts. He also alleged that a computer kept inside the vehicle was taken away and that an attempt was made to pull him out of the vehicle and assault him.Another vehicle was also targeted by protesters on Saturday. The moving car that was vandalised had a woman sitting in the rear seat. Angry protesters were also seen tearing a banner bearing the picture of the Prime Minister that had been put up at a petrol pump.DCP Maneesh Kumar Shandilya said some miscreants attempted to turn the student protest violent, damaged vehicles and misbehaved with commuters. “Efforts are being made to identify such people through CCTV footage. Strict action will be taken against them,” he said.Police are now investigating both FIRs while simultaneously examining CCTV footage and other evidence to fix accountability for the violence and damage to property during the protest.
