Prayagraj: North Central Railway (NCR) has rolled out a technology-enabled monsoon monitoring and waterlogging management protocol for Road Under Bridges (RUBs) across its jurisdiction, using the Bridge Management System (BMS) to monitor water accumulation, classify vulnerable locations and regulate traffic during heavy rain.According to senior PRO, NCR Amit Malviya, dedicated assistant divisional engineer (ADEN)-wise monsoon WhatsApp groups have been created for real-time coordination. Section-wise rainfall duration is reported hourly, while geo-tagged photographs of affected RUBs are shared immediately. Geo-tagged photographs of all RUBs are also collected and reviewed twice daily to monitor waterlogging.Waterlogging at every RUB is reported in real time through the BMS.

After dewatering, the updated status is uploaded to confirm restoration. Under the vulnerability classification, waterlogging of more than 5 cm and up to 20 cm is categorised as vulnerable (mild), requiring BMS-based inspection every 15 days. Water depth exceeding 20 cm is classified as vulnerable (severe), with inspections required once a week. Waterlogging exceeding 50 cm and persisting for more than six hours is treated as a critical case.If waterlogging exceeds 300 mm (30 cm), the RUB is temporarily closed to road traffic until complete dewatering is carried out.Watchmen have been deployed at sensitive locations to monitor conditions in real time. They have been sensitised about waterlogging risks and instructed to chain off routes whenever traffic regulation is required, preventing vehicles from entering and getting stranded in waterlogged Limited Height Subways (LHS).NCR has also clarified that certain waterways and drainage culverts are meant exclusively for water drainage and management and are not intended for public transit. Photographs of these structures are sometimes mistaken for RUBs or LHSs, leading to confusion. The railway has urged the public to distinguish between operational transit structures and dedicated waterways.
