Hyderabad: The school education department on Monday launched a two-day state-level residential orientation programme on the Performance Grading Index (PGI) for district education teams at the Dr MCRHRD Institute, focusing on better planning and improving school education outcomes.Virtually inaugurating the programme, education secretary Yogita Rana said Telangana’s PGI ranking improved from 28th in 2024-25 to 18th in 2025-26, reflecting the combined efforts of officials from the state, district, mandal, cluster and school levels.She said PGI should be treated as a diagnostic tool rather than just a ranking exercise, with greater focus on learning outcomes, Foundational Literacy and Numeracy (FLN), data accuracy and regular school monitoring.Rana directed district officials to strengthen data collection, verification and validation systems and conduct district-level training programmes for field staff on PGI indicators and data management.Director of school education E Naveen Nicolas congratulated officials on the improved performance and said Jangaon and Mancherial were the top-performing districts under the PGI framework. He also appreciated Peddapalli, Wanaparthy and Narayanpet for their performance in the FLN sample study, stressing that accurate reporting and district accountability would be key to sustaining progress.
