COIMBATORE: The Race Course police in Coimbatore city have registered a case against two men on charges of cheating a Kerala-based gold merchant of jewellery worth Rs 32 lakh.According to police, E Raju, 62, who runs a gold jewellery business in Thrissur in Kerala with, came to Coimbatore in March 2025 to exchange old gold ornaments in the RS Puram area. His business partners Santhosh and Gopalakrishnan were also with him.While the trio were near Race Course, two men, identified as Raveendran and Thyagarajan of Coimbatore, approached them in a car and introduced themselves as gold merchants. They persuaded Raju to hand over the old jewellery, assuring him that they would provide new jewellery in exchange.Trusting them, Raju handed over 335.860 grams of old gold ornaments, valued at Rs 32 lakh, to them. The two men took the jewellery on the pretext of testing its purity. But they neither returned the ornaments nor paid the money.Police said Raju had tried repeatedly over the past year to recover the gold jewellery or the money, but the duo allegedly kept evading him.After this, Raju filed a complaint with the Race Course police. Police registered a case against Raveendran and Thyagarajan and began investigations.
