The CBI has taken Giribala Singh, mother-in-law of deceased Twisha Sharma, into custody after the Madhya Pradesh High Court quashed her anticipatory bail.

BHOPAL: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Thursday took Giribala Singh, mother-in-law of deceased Twisha Sharma, into custody after the Madhya Pradesh high court quashed the anticipatory bail granted to her in the high-profile case involving allegations of dowry harassment and cruelty. Samarth and his mother Giribala Singh are being questioned at CBI office in Bhopal. The development came a day after the Madhya Pradesh High Court set aside a May 15 order of a Bhopal sessions court that had granted anticipatory bail to Giribala Singh. Justice Devnarayan Mishra, while allowing petitions challenging the relief, observed that the trial court had failed to adequately appreciate material available in the case diary, witness statements and allegations levelled by the deceased’s family before granting protection from arrest. The case pertains to allegations registered under provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita relating to cruelty and dowry, along with sections of the Dowry Prohibition Act, in connection with the death of Twisha Sharma, whose case is currently being investigated by the CBI.In its order, the High Court noted that statements recorded from Twisha Sharma’s family members since May 13 contained allegations that Giribala Singh, along with her son, had allegedly subjected the deceased to harassment and pressured her to terminate her pregnancy. The court further observed that WhatsApp chats, coupled with postmortem findings indicating multiple ante-mortem injuries, warranted a deeper probe. The High Court also took note of submissions made by the prosecution and the CBI that Giribala Singh had allegedly not cooperated fully with the investigation despite notices issued to her. The agency submitted that custodial interrogation could be necessary considering the seriousness of allegations and the stage of investigation.Following the quashing of anticipatory bail, CBI officials took Giribala Singh into custody on Thursday for questioning as part of the ongoing probe into the circumstances surrounding Twisha Sharma’s death.
