Bhubaneswar/Cuttack: The countdown to Durga Puja has entered its final phase with more than 350 major puja committees in the twin cities busy toiling round-the-clock to prepare for one of the biggest festivals of the year. From towering theme-based pandals in Bhubaneswar to the glittering silver tableaux, or Chandi Medha, in Cuttack, organisers are leaving no stone unturned to make this year’s celebrations bigger and more visually striking than ever.In Bhubaneswar, theme-based pandals continue to be the biggest attraction. Several puja committees are recreating iconic destinations and landmarks from across India and abroad. While one puja committee is drawing inspiration from the futuristic skyline and architectural marvels of Dubai, another has planned a theme paying tribute to victims of the devastating flash floods that struck Nepal earlier this year.Devotees will also get a glimpse of spiritual landmarks through pandals inspired by the Chota Char Dham pilgrimage circuit of Uttarakhand, while another committee is recreating an ancient Shiva shrine in Cambodia, blending mythology, heritage and architecture. “Every year, we try to offer something unique to visitors. Apart from artistic excellence, many committees are also incorporating social messages through their themes,” said Sailendra Jena, a puja organiser. In Cuttack, often regarded as Odisha’s Durga Puja capital, the spotlight remains firmly on the famed Chandi Medha. Artisans are busy giving the final touches to elaborate silver backdrops and decorative structures that form the centrepiece of the city’s celebrations. This year, several puja committees are set to unveil Chandi Medha for the first time, adding to the festive grandeur. Extensive lighting arrangements and decorative installations are also being put in place across major puja locations.Organisers expect lakhs of visitors from across Odisha and neighbouring states to visit the two cities during the festive period. Civic agencies, police and fire services have already begun preparations to manage traffic, ensure crowd safety and facilitate smooth movement of devotees.
