New Delhi: Trinamool Congress members on Tuesday led an Opposition protest in the Lok Sabha against the Election Commission brass, alleging bias in the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the electoral rolls in poll-bound West Bengal.

The protest is seen as a part of a Trinamool plan to rally an Opposition impeachment motion against Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar. As soon as the Lower House commenced, Trinamool members raised slogans and trooped into the well of the House. Members of other Opposition parties also joined the protest, leading to a brief adjournment in the House.

Trinamool members, who didn’t initially sign an Opposition-sponsored notice for a resolution to remove the Lok Sabha Speaker, had a couple of days ago said they will back the same. They also made it clear that Trinamool Congress expects other Opposition parties to back its resolve to bring an impeachment motion notice against the CEC.
Talking to media persons later, Trinamool MP Saugata Roy questioned the conduct of the SIR exercise in West Bengal, noting that as many as 5.9 million voters are on the adjudication list. “We will move it (notice for impeachment motion against the CEC) in the Rajya Sabha in a few days,” he added.
