West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee on Monday said Prime Minister Narendra Modi should resign as PM before projecting himself as a candidate in all the 294 assembly seats in the state. “Modiji should resign from the prime ministership before saying that he is the candidate in all 294 seats in Bengal. Do you wish to be the chief minister of Bengal or remain the prime minister?” Banerjee said.

Her remarks came a day after Modi said he represents all BJP candidates in the state and urged voters to give him an opportunity to ensure good governance. “You are an outsider here. Handle Delhi first, then think about West Bengal,” she added.

Urging people not to vote for BJP, CPI-M, Congress or any other party, Banerjee appealed to voters to support only Trinamool Congress. She accused the BJP of “playing a game with women” in the name of the women’s reservation bill. Banerjee said her party has 37% women representatives in Parliament. Highlighting her government’s initiatives, she said, “We have ensured 50% representation for women in panchayats and municipalities. You (BJP) have nothing. Women are afraid in BJP-ruled states.”

Addressing a public rally in Suri in Birbhum district, she expressed confidence that Trinamool would win more than 226 seats.
