Guwahati: Tezpur University marked Zubeen Garg’s first death anniversary with two days of tributes, cultural programmes and calls for justice.The Sept 18-19 observance, organised by Tezpur University Charcha Mancha, brought together students, research scholars, teachers, non-teaching staff and university residents.It opened with a panel discussion on “The Crisis in Higher Education, Student Movement and Tezpur University” at Council Hall.Pro-vice-chancellor Prof. Amarendra Kr Das inaugurated the session. Author Munin Bayan, writer and former student Kishor Kumar Kalita, and Darrang College associate professor Kangkan Deka were panellists. Research scholar Uddipan Hazarika anchored the programme.The evening featured Négarā Nām/Dihanām by hostel residents, a cultural programme and a screening of Kanchanjangha, a film by Garg.The second day began with a tribute, followed by a sapling plantation and campus-cleaning drives. Work also began on installing Garg’s statue in front of the Central Library. A mural was unveiled at Pobitora Madam Curie Women’s Hostel and Community Hall.A candle-lighting ceremony and silent march across the campus were held seeking justice for Garg.The observance concluded with a cultural evening, a documentary on the student-led movement that followed Garg’s death and Roi Roi Binale, his last film.
