Kolkata: Students or any person found on the Jadavpur University campus without legitimate reason and permission after 8 pm would be treated as trespassers and appropriate legal action would be taken against them, said new acting registrar Debajit Dutta on Monday. A circular, signed by him, mentioned only evening course students, with ID proof, could stay till 9.30 pm.Other rules, such as showing JU ID cards for entering the campus between 7 pm and 7 am and bar on the use of narcotics and illegal substances, were reiterated on Monday.The prohibitions are being imposed ostensibly to enforce discipline on the campus and step up security comes following the recent assault on students pertaining to a general body meeting that went on till late in the evening and vandalism on the campus on Aug 19 and 20, allegedly by right-wing supporters.The notice has also barred gatherings by students, except those from evening classes, at any part of the campus, including the university ground, canteens and opposite Subarna Jayanti Bhavan, after 8 pm. “This may be relaxed only for students of the university during fests and other student activities, which should also be restricted up to 9 pm as far as possible,” read the notice.Dutta claimed the measures were aimed at enforcing discipline and law and order as safety and security of students, faculty and campus residents were of utmost importance. “Security personnel, including the night in-charge, are responsible for controlling entry and exit points, and their granting or denying access after 8 pm are binding to prevent unauthorised entry and maintain safety. Strict action will be taken against misconduct and intimidation. We are also conducting an audit to install more lights and CCTV cameras,” he said. Dutta pointed out that they were looking into graffiti and posters on the walls of Aurobindo Bhavan, a Grade 1 heritage structure, where such things were not permissible under heritage act.JU VC Chiranjib Bhattacharjee had earlier told TOI that restrictions were needed as students stayed on the campus till 10 pm and beyond. He had said, “Day scholars should ideally stay till 8 pm and evening students till 9.30 pm as they have classes till 9pm.”
