Margao: The bodies of a 77-year-old woman and her 42-year-old daughter were recovered from their residence at Kusman in Quepem on Saturday, after neighbours alerted police to a foul smell emanating from the house. The two women were identified as Alka Shirvoikar and her spinster daughter, Anar Shirvoikar.Quepem police inspector Prashal Dessai said both bodies were found in a decomposed state, indicating that the deaths occurred several days before they were found. “As the front and rear doors were latched from inside, we had to break open the main door to gain entry,” he said. The elderly woman was found lying on a cot. “The mother appears to have died of natural causes as there were no external injuries on her body. However, the post-mortem report will throw more light on the cause of death,” Dessai told TOI.Neighbours said they last saw them at the Quepem market four days ago suggesting the deaths may have occurred at least three days before the bodies were discovered. Police have ruled out foul play in the matter.
