Chandigarh: In a bid to ease persistent traffic congestion around Chandigarh Railway Station, Chandigarh Traffic Police on Monday conducted a joint traffic survey with officials from the Ambala railway division and experts from the Chandigarh Road Safety Society (CRSS).The survey aimed to identify the reasons behind traffic snarls in the area and suggest practical measures to improve vehicular movement. During the inspection, officials found that congestion at the station’s entry and exit points was mainly caused by conflicts between CTU buses and other vehicles, unauthorised halting of taxis, indiscriminate pick-up and drop-off by auto-rickshaws, and illegal parking.Based on the findings, several measures have been proposed. Traffic police plan to channelise the existing CTU bus stop to ensure buses halt in a proper parallel alignment, facilitating safer boarding and deboarding of passengers. Authorities are also considering shifting the U-turn used by CTU buses near the Railway light point around 100 metres ahead to provide better turning space and reduce congestion.The feasibility of relocating the CTU bus stop beyond the railway station exit gate will also be explored. Traffic police said taxi halts near the station entrance will be strictly regulated, while designated pick-up and drop-off points for auto-rickshaws may be introduced.Officials noted that congestion peaks during the afternoon arrival and departure of multiple Vande Bharat Express trains. As the Ajmer Vande Bharat Express departs from Platform No. 6 on the Panchkula side, passengers have been advised to approach the station from that side wherever feasible.Traffic police said the proposed measures would be implemented in coordination with railway authorities and other stakeholders to improve commuter convenience and safety.
