Pune: Several divisions of the city’s traffic police have written to officials of PMC, requesting them to resurface roads riddled with potholes and repair the ones that have been dug up for drainage and other infrastructure-related works, as these surfaces are negatively impacting vehicular flow.Deputy commissioner of police (traffic) Sandip Bhajibhakare told TOI on Wednesday, “We have requested Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) officials to resurface pothole-ridden roads to avert any untoward incidents during the monsoon and also to facilitate the smooth movement of the upcoming palkhi processions of Sant Tukaram Maharaj and Sant Dnyaneshwar Maharaj.”The palkhis of both saints will proceed towards the temple town of Pandharpur on July 9.“We have already inspected the majority of roads through which the palkhi procession will pass in the city,” the DCP said.According to the police, several roads in areas like Mundhwa, Kharadi, Kondhwa, Bund Garden Road, Peths, Aundh, Baner, Balewadi, Warje, Sinhagad Road and Katraj require urgent repairs.Bhajibhakare further said, “Our personnel in local traffic divisions regularly assess road conditions and prepare reports for PMC officials, recommending necessary repairs and improvements. At present, potholes are causing serious traffic congestion during peak morning hours. The situation is likely to worsen during the monsoon. So, we have requested civic officials to carry out repairs at the earliest.”He added, “Secondly, several infrastructure projects are currently underway across the city. Works related to drainage lines, water pipelines, cables and other utilities are in progress. As a result, trenches have been dug along roads in areas such as Baner, Vishrantwadi, Bund Garden Road and the Katraj-Phursungi Road, among others. Rainwater has accumulated in many of these trenches, and we have requested PMC officials to expedite all these works to prevent accidents. Early completion of these projects will also help ensure the smooth passage of the wari procession through the city.”
