Coimbatore: City police have begun an investigation into the robbery of 5.2 lakh from a trader during a night bus journey on February 18.Police said P Ravi, 50, of Nallampalayam, was robbed on a bus when travelling to the city from Pudukottai. Ravi, who is in the business of selling mobile phone cases, is building a house in the city. The theft took place when he was returning from his hometown after pledging his wife’s jewellery to fund the construction. He had placed the bag with the cash on the overhead rack above his seat.He got down at the Gandhipuram bus stand around 4.45am on February 19. However, when he tried to open the bag, he realised that someone had applied superglue to the zipper. He then got a knife from a nearby bakery, and tore open the bag, only to find the cash missing.When Ravi approached the Kattoor police on the same day, he was asked to file a complaint at the Ottanchathiram police station, as the theft was suspected to have taken place when he got down for refreshments there. Ravi later submitted a petition to Coimbatore city police commissioner N Kannan on Wednesday, after which the commissioner directed the Kattoor police to register a case.
