Nagpur: The traffic police have directed National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) to install proper direction boards on the Indora-Dighori Flyover at the earliest, a day after TOI highlighted traffic problems faced by commuters using the newly inaugurated corridor.“People are getting confused due to lack of signage. We have asked NHAI to address it immediately,” DCP (traffic) Aditya Mirkhelkar told TOI.Mirkhelkar said regular checks and traffic police deployments had been made at key locations to regulate movement and prevent motorists from stopping on the elevated corridor.“Many citizens reached the flyover just to see it, which led to traffic jams. We have now appointed a team to ensure that no one stops on the flyover to click photographs or for any other purpose,” he said.The newly opened 9-km elevated corridor has eased traffic movement across several busy stretches. However, motorists, particularly those unfamiliar with the new road layout, have struggled to identify exits at key interchanges.The problem is more pronounced for heavy vehicles, which have limited scope to correct their route after missing a turn. Traffic police officials said such vehicles may slow down or change lanes abruptly, disrupting traffic flow.The issue was particularly visible at the elevated rotary near Ashok Chowk, where five routes converge. Motorists were seen slowing down abruptly, changing lanes at the last moment and, in some cases, circling the rotary more than once while trying to identify the correct exit.The Rs 998-crore corridor was planned to provide a signal-free passage through some of Nagpur’s busiest stretches and reduce travel time.The first two days of operation have highlighted the need for better advance guidance at the multiple interchanges. Motorists said boards should be placed well before exits, giving them enough time to move into the appropriate lane instead of making sudden manoeuvres.Traffic police officials said effective guidance, lane discipline and preventing motorists from stopping on the flyover would be crucial to maintaining smooth movement as traffic volumes rise after the initial curiosity over the newly opened corridor subsides.
