Chennai: Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) carried out an eviction drive on Valluvar Kottam High Road and surrounding areas on Saturday, removing nearly 30 encroachments choking pedestrian footpaths. This follows a TOI report on Aug 19 highlighting the issue.GCC zonal officer (zone 9) Senthilkumaran said, “10 vegetable shops operating on pavements, two fruit stalls, seven bunks, 15 carts, and several crates were removed with police assistance.” He added that repeated anti-encroachment action will be carried out to prevent them from returning. The drive was conducted in wards 110 and 113, covering Valluvar Kottam High Road, Kodambakkam High Road, Lake Area First Main Road, Mahalingapuram near Loyola College and Tank Bund Road. The action comes days after TOI reported that encroachments narrowed pedestrian footpaths in and around Valluvar Kottam, forcing pedestrians to use the carriageway amid heavy traffic.Similarly, following another TOI report on foul-smelling water and disruption of Metrowater supply in parts of Perambur and Anna Nagar, officials rectified the issue. They visited the affected location on Saturday morning and resolved a water pollution complaint on Patel Road, Perambur.Metrowater officials said they first identified the source of the pollution. “The water main was flushed, and the supply was checked after the repair work. Water supply was restored, and subsequent quality testing found the water to be normal,” they said. Similar action was also taken in Anna Nagar.
