Chennai: Shiv Das Meena, chairman of the Tamil Nadu Real Estate Regulatory Authority (TNRERA), along with members Subramaniam and Sukumar, have resigned from thier posts.This marks the latest in a series of exits by senior retired officials from government-appointed posts in Tamil Nadu. Earlier, former DGP Shankar Jiwal resigned as chairman of the Tamil Nadu Fire Commission, while former DGP Sunil Kumar also stepped down from a statutory post – chairman of the Tamil Nadu Uniformed Services Recruitment Board.“The vacancies come at a crucial time for TNRERA, which was constituted in 2017. The govt should fill in the vacancies soon,” said a developer.The Real Estate (Regulation and Development) Act, 2016 (RERA) provides that the state government must appoint the chairperson and members based on the recommendations of a selection committee comprising the Chief Justice of the Madras High Court or a judge nominated by the Chief Justice, the Housing Secretary and the Law Secretary. The committee recommends names to the government for appointment. TNRERA consists of one chairperson and up to four whole-time members.The authority’s chairperson and members are appointed for a five-year term or until they attain the prescribed age limit, whichever is earlier. The Act also lays down a detailed procedure for their removal. If allegations of misconduct or incapacity arise, the state government has to refer the matter to the Chief Justice of the Madras High Court, who may nominate a judge to conduct an inquiry. Action can be taken only after the inquiry report is submitted.
