PUDUCHERRY: A 20-year-old college student collapsed while participating in a physical test and was declared dead upon arrival in the hospital in Puducherry on Saturday. The deceased has been identified as Gokul from the Kannamangalam area near Arani in Tiruvannamalai district. Gokul was a second-year undergraduate student at a college in Arani. His father, Babu, is a labourer.The recruitment rally started at the Indira Gandhi Sports Complex in Uppalam here on Saturday morning. During the timed running segment of the physical fitness test, Gokul collapsed on the track. Organisers rushed him to Puducherry govt general hospital for emergency medical attention. However, doctors who examined him declared that he was brought dead. Upon receiving the tragic news, Gokul’s grieving parents and relatives arrived at the Odiansalai police station late Saturday evening. They pointed out that Gokul was an active athlete who had recently won second place in a regional marathon in his hometown. They expressed suspicions over the sudden nature of his death and urged authorities to investigate the matter thoroughly. The Odiansalai police registered a case and initiated an inquiry into the incident. Police said postmortem scheduled for Sunday would help determine the exact cause of his death.
