Mysuru: Representatives of the Tibetan community from the Gurupura settlement in Hunsur have urged Lok Sabha MP Yaduveer Wadiyar to raise the Tibetan issue in Parliament and seek greater international attention to the preservation of Tibet’s identity, culture and rights.In a memorandum submitted to the MP, Tsering Youdon, president of the Regional Tibetan Youth Congress (RTYC), Hunsur, and Sonam Dolker, president of the Regional Tibetan Women’s Association (RYWA), Hunsur, sought his support for the Tibetan cause.They urged Yaduveer to highlight concerns over the continuing erosion of Tibetan identity, language, culture and religious freedom, and requested the Union govt to raise the situation in Tibet at international forums, including the United Nations.The memorandum also appealed to India to encourage democratic nations worldwide to take a principled stand on the Tibetan issue and support international attention to the rights and aspirations of Tibetans. It sought support for preserving Tibet’s cultural, religious and linguistic identity and opposing policies that, according to the representatives, seek to forcibly assimilate Tibetans.The representatives highlighted the self-immolation of Lobga Rangzen on July 2 in front of the UN office in New York, describing it as a tragic expression of despair over the situation in Tibet. They appealed to Yaduveer to acknowledge the incident in Parliament and encourage parliamentary and governmental engagement with Tibetan representatives and civil society.The memorandum stated that India’s democratic traditions and commitment to human dignity, cultural diversity and peaceful expression could help draw greater attention to the Tibetan issue.Tibetan Parliament member felicitates DKSMysuru: Chophel Thupten, a member of the Tibetan Parliament-in-Exile from the Tibetan settlement at Bylakuppe, called on chief minister DK Shivakumar on Tuesday and felicitated him.During the meeting, Thupten submitted a memorandum seeking the release of Karnataka govt funds for the welfare and development of the Tibetan community.The Tibetan representative, accompanied by Buddhist monks, also presented a statue of Lord Buddha to Shivakumar, according to a release.
