While reshuffle talks are gaining momentum in other states, the BJP-ruled Manipur government continues to function with only the chief minister and four ministers.
A senior BJP leader, requesting anonymity, said, “The priority is restoring normalcy in Manipur, as violence has now spread to Naga areas that were earlier outside the ambit of the unrest.”
The leader added, “Seven ministerial berths are vacant. However, the cabinet expansion is yet to get approval from the BJP central leadership. The leadership is closely monitoring the situation and will take a decision at the appropriate time.”
On March 4, Chief Minister Khemchand Singh allocated portfolios among the two deputy chief ministers and two cabinet ministers, while retaining most key departments with himself.
The sanctioned strength of the Manipur council of ministers is 12. The state is likely to go to Assembly polls early next year. Khemchand Singh assumed office on February 4, and the NDA government led by him won the floor test in the Assembly the following day.
