Agartala: The Tripura Human Rights Commission (THRC) has sought clarification from the North Tripura district magistrate on the land status of a woman whose husband was allegedly abducted and murdered by National Liberation Front of Tripura (NLFT extremists in 2020.Justice Arindam Lodh, who heads the commission, took note of the situation after media reports highlighted the struggles faced by Shipra Debnath, the widow of Litan Debnath, from a remote village along the Tripura-Mizoram border in Kanchanpur.According to the reports cited in the THRC order, Litan was kidnapped at gunpoint on Nov 26 2020, and his decomposed remains were found 49 days later. He was the sole provider for his family, which includes his wife and four daughters.The THRC has sought reports from the North Tripura district administration and the superintendent of police. While the report from the district magistrate and collector has been submitted, the report from the SP is still awaited.The district administration reported that Debnath has been living in rented accommodations with her four children at Damcherra Market. It said she applied in May 2021 for allotment of Plot No. 282 under Damcherra Mouja, but the land allotment committee did not approve the request because the plot was close to a village road.An alternative plot was suggested, but the administration said official records do not support claims that 0.06 acres were allocated to Debnath in 2025 and later encroached upon.The THRC noted that the report did not clarify whether Debnath and her children were dispossessed of the plot mentioned. The commission has directed the district magistrate to provide clarification on this issue and decided to hear to Debnath’s account before taking further steps.The next hearing is scheduled for Sept 10.
