Chennai: CPI has launched a signature campaign against the proposal to build a new secretariat at Foreshore Estate in Chennai.CPI state secretary M Veerapandian, who launched the signature campaign on Sunday, said a govt order should be released declaring that the site has been dropped. “The sea and the shore belong to the people, the fishermen. Mountains belong to the people living there. It doesn’t make any sense if we remove people from the place they belong to,” he told reporters.Govt’s move inviting a detailed project report to build the secretariat at Foreshore Estate drew widespread criticism. Subsequently, govt said that no decision has been taken yet on building the secretariat at the proposed site. At the same time, govt has not announced that the plan was being dropped.Signing the petition against the choice of the site, Veerapandian said govt should declare that it would not go ahead with the plan. “No buildings should be constructed in the sea shore. This is the demand of people. CPI reiterates the demand,” he said.
