Thane district continues to grapple with the season’s heaviest spell of rain

THANE: The Thane district Collector Dr. Shrikrishna Panchal on Monday issued orders to prohibit public entry to waterfalls, forts, dams, lakes and riverbanks within the district until further orders citing heightened risk to visitors during heavy rains and considering fatal mishaps at these spots in previous years. The move comes as Thane district continues to grapple with the season’s heaviest spell of rain, with govt authorities remaining on high alert for further heavy showers and strong winds. It may be recalled that the district has several monsoon hangout spots like Malshej, Badlapur and Mumbra among other options that are popular among revellers from Mumbai and neighbouring regions. Panchal who also heads the District Disaster Management Authority, issued the orders following a review of the rain situation in the region.“Thane witnessed intense rainfall over the last few days including leading to waterlogging, uprooted trees, traffic disruptions and several rain-related incidents. With more heavy rain forecast, there could be possibility of natural disasters like landslides near waterfalls, drowning incidents in dams and lakes and accidents on slippery trekking routes. Accordingly, departments responsible for managing these sites have been directed to enforce measures to prevent public access until the order is withdrawn,” said an official present for the meeting.Meanwhile, the forest department said they have stepped up vigil at the SGNP entry point at Yeoor considering the stretch with nearly six to seven scenic points attracts revellers who often allegedly evade detection and enter the prohibited zone risking their lives every monsoon.
