Hyderabad: A day after Telangana Private Junior Colleges Management Association (TPJMA) alleged that Telangana Board of Intermediate Education (TGBIE) has not granted affiliation to 156 junior colleges, the Board on Sunday issued a clarification, terming the allegations “baseless” and defending its regulatory action. In a fact sheet, TGBIE said 3,241 junior colleges were granted formal admission permissions for the current academic year, compared with 3,349 affiliated in 2025-26. It said 12 colleges were undergoing evaluation for shifting premises or completing documentation, adding that affiliations and access to the special admission module would be issued upon compliance. The board said 27 colleges had voluntarily applied for ‘NIL’ admissions after recording zero student enrolments. It added that affiliation could not legally be granted to an institution without student enrolments in its first year.Citing safety concerns, the board said inspections had uncovered 65 colleges that had submitted fake fire safety no-objection certificates (NOCs). It said action followed repeated reminders and opportunities to rectify deficiencies.Rejecting allegations of favouritism towards corporate institutions, the board said it had imposed penalties of over Rs 4 crore on corporate colleges between July and Oct for various regulatory violations.“Student safety and educational integrity were non-negotiable,” the board said in the release, adding that inspections and task force operations were routine administrative procedures to verify infrastructure and institutional standards.TGBIE also said a high-level compliance committee was constituted to streamline administrative processes and help managements meet requirements. It was considering publishing institutional shortfalls on its website to improve transparency. The board urged college managements to comply with statutory norms and fire safety standards.
