Some lessons in cricket are learned the hard way. Telangana’s first attempt at a State-run T20 league (Telangana T20 League) disappeared after just one season in 2018. Eight years later, the Hyderabad Cricket Association returned with TG20, not merely to revive an idea, but to prove it deserved a future.
Twenty-one days and 32 matches later, the inaugural edition ended on Sunday with enough evidence to suggest the State may finally have found a stage capable of nurturing its cricketing ambitions.
TG20 opened on June 21 before a few thousand spectators. It closed with 33,247 fans packing the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium, where Hyderabad e-Champions completed an almost flawless campaign by lifting the trophy.
The inaugural edition saw 10 centuries, with conditions — as they have done recently — favouring the batters. But there were eight instances of bowlers picking up four or more wickets, with seamers finding more success.
TG20’s triumph is the platform it birthed; for fresh talent like 16-year-old Ved Reddy, a breakout spinner who finished second on the bowling charts with 15 scalps.
Then, there was the much-manifested spotlight on district cricketers. As the tournament progressed, supporters travelled from across Telangana not only to watch the biggest names but also to cheer for local heroes representing their towns.
The inaugural run wasn’t without hiccups, like the 30-minute floodlight failure during the final that threatened to trigger some unfortunate headlines that might have overshadowed an otherwise memorable tournament.
There were also the predicted absences of TG20’s marquee attractions. Tilak Varma dazzled with a blistering 56-ball unbeaten 136 and two wickets in his lone appearance, while Mohammed Siraj did not feature at all. Yet the tournament never lost its pulse.
TG20 announced its arrival with an encouraging first chapter. But spectacles are easy; steadiness not as much. The league must persevere until it is judged by its legacy over its promise.
