Agartala: Tension prevailed in Agartala on Thursday as candidates who cleared the 2024 Teacher Eligibility Test (TET) organised a protest, calling for the immediate appointment of all 1,856 qualified individuals.The situation escalated when police used force and deployed a water cannon to disperse the protesters. Around 100 protesters were apprehended and taken to the AD Nagar Police Lines ground.The protesters demanded the release of the recommended candidates’ list and completion of the recruitment process for the govt-approved graduate teacher and undergraduate teacher (UT) vacancies.They said a list of eligible candidates was prepared after the TET-I and TET-II examinations in 2024, following which they applied for recruitment. Document verification of around 1,856 aspirants had also been completed, but the recommended list was yet to be released, they claimed.The candidates also said they had requested meetings with CM Manik Saha and finance minister Pranajit Singha Roy to discuss their concerns but had been unsuccessful in meeting them.The candidates warned that they would intensify their agitation, including through a large sit-in and hunger strike, if their demands were not addressed.
