Vadodara: Over a year after the Gambhira bridge collapsed killing 22 and severing a crucial road link between Vadodara and Anand districts, the new bridge has been completed, within the state govt’s 12-month timeframe to restore the connection.The new two-lane bridge across the Mahi river has been completed ahead of its Aug 13 contractual deadline. The roads and buildings department has now begun testing on the structure, before it can be opened to traffic.The 854.5-metre bridge, built at a cost of Rs 212 crore, incorporates several modern construction features aimed at improving its durability and reducing maintenance requirements. Epoxy-coated steel has been used to minimize corrosion and enhance its service life, while precast elements helped speed up construction.Inspection platforms have been provided at each of the bridge’s piers to facilitate easier inspection and maintenance.The bridge comprises 23 spans supported by 21 piers and two abutments. Construction began on Aug 14, 2025, just over a month after the old bridge collapsed on July 9, sending vehicles into the Mahi river.Officials said construction was completed despite challenges posed by river conditions and other disruptions. An average of 300 workers were deployed every day, with work carried out in shifts to maintain the pace of construction.“Construction has been completed within the 12-month timeframe. Testing is underway and further procedures will be taken up after the tests are completed,” a senior roads and buildings department official said.
