Berhampur: Police on Monday detained a 16-year-old boy for allegedly sexually assaulting a 7-year-old girl in Gajapati district on Sunday.Police said the girl was alone at home while her parents had gone out to attend a function when the accused, who lives in the same locality, allegedly sexually assaulted her.
After the girl narrated her ordeal to her mother when she returned, a police complaint was lodged and a case registered. “We have registered a case under relevant sections of BNS and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (Pocso) Act and launched an investigation,” a senior police officer said. Medical examinations of both the survivor and the accused have been conducted as per procedure, police said. A senior police officer is supervising the investigation. Sources said the girl’s family was acquainted with the accused and had extended financial help to his family on earlier occasions, including for his education.
