Locals stage protest at Tila Mod over Nitin’s alleged murder

Ghaziabad: A 32-year-old man was allegedly killed by his in-laws in the Teela Mod area of the city on Monday evening. On Tuesday, two accused were arrested — while a manhunt is on for others — after Nitin Kumar Jayant, a school teacher in Ristal, was strangled after being attacked by six people.Earlier on Tuesday, a case was registered against six people, including two named accused — Nitin’s father-in-law and his brother — following a complaint lodged by Nitin’s elder brother Amit after Nitin died at a Delhi hospital on Monday night. The case was registered under charges of murder and Scheduled Castes and the Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, 1989. Assistant commissioner of police Atul Kumar Singh said Nitin’s father-in-law Mehruddin and his brother Asif Ali have been arrested.Following the autopsy on Tuesday, the victim’s family staged a protest near the Banthla flyover on Loni-Bhopura Road, demanding immediate arrest of all accused. The protest caused a temporary traffic disruption before police intervened and assured strict action.Nitin — a resident of Geetanjali Vihar — had married Muskan, daughter of Mehruddin, from Puranpur Nawada village in Baghpat district in May 2025 against the wishes of her family. Police said the couple’s inter-community marriage had led to ongoing tensions. Muskan is pregnant, police said.According to the FIR, the incident was premeditated and executed under the pretext of reconciliation. Amit said the family belongs to the Jatav community.“Following an argument between Nitin and Muskan, the latter got upset and went to her parental home on Sunday. On Monday, Mehruddin and Asif called us on the pretext of holding a discussion and resolving the matter and asked us to come to Banthla closed railway crossing,” the FIR said.Amit, along with Nitin and neighbour Sumitra, reached there. “They told us that Muskan was in Bukhedi village and made the three of us sit in their car. They then drove us towards Hariyali farmhouse,” Amit alleged.“When we became suspicious, we asked them to stop the car and started walking towards Bhanehra village. Meanwhile, a motorcycle came from behind and we sent our neighbor Sumitra back home on it. After that, at around 7.15pm, another car arrived from which four unknown persons got down. The four, along with Mehruddin and Asif, caught hold of my brother and said, ‘Let us finish him today.’ They then started beating up my brother and strangled him to death,” Amit said.Amit somehow managed to escape from the spot and called the police helpline number and infromed them about the incident. Police reached the scene and found Nitin unconscious near a culvert in Bhanehra village. He was rushed to a nearby hospital and later referred to GTB Hospital in Delhi, where doctors declared him dead.
