According to the student, the incident took place on the night of March 15. Around 9:30 PM, he went to sleep in a room other than his assigned one.

Ujjain: The teacher, accused of beating a student with a cane at the residential school run by Maharishi Sandipani Rashtriya Veda Vidya Pratishthan on Chintaman Road, was on Monday arrested by the Chintaman police for cruelty to children, voluntarily causing hurt and use of obscene language.

The accused, Dattadas Raghunath Shewde, was produced before a district court and granted bail of Rs 25,000. He has also been dismissed from service, with the institution accepting what it termed his resignation application on the same day the video surfaced.

Chintaman police station in-charge Hemraj Yadav said Shewde, who served as hostel in-charge, was arrested from the police station itself after he appeared there on Sunday night. Earlier that day, the student came to Chintaman police station along with his teacher Satyam Shukla and filed a verbal complaint.

According to the student, the incident took place on the night of March 15. Around 9:30 PM, he went to sleep in a room other than his assigned one.

When hostel in-charge Shewde came to know of this at around 10 PM, he called the student out of the room and abused him with obscene language. When the student objected, Shewde took him to the hostel office and beat him with a wooden stick.

A case was registered against Shewde on the basis of the student’s complaint under Sections 115 and 296 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and Section 75 of the Juvenile Justice Act.
