CHENNAI: The Tamil Nadu State Marketing Corporation (Tasmac) has restricted hard liquor sales to 4.5 litres per individual, 7.8 litres of beer, and up to 9 litres of wine until the model code of conduct remains in force. An individual can purchase up to six full bottles (750ml) of Indian-made foreign liquor (IMFL) or imported liquor, or 12 half bottles (375ml) or 24 quarter bottles (180ml). Similarly, only 12 beer bottles (650ml) can be sold to one person.District managers have issued circulars to all supervisors and salesmen as per instructions from the management to comply with the limit. Sales are monitored through an end-to-end computerization system, and sales beyond the permitted quantity in a single bill will be flagged, necessitating inquiry and departmental action. The instructions came after supervisors said there was no clear definition of bulk sales. Tasmac has warned against overstocking of liquor at retail shops beyond 50% of the corresponding stock in the previous years, bulk sales to individuals and against storing and selling liquor illegally and beyond operating hours.
