The Election Commission of India (ECI) has announced the schedule for Tamil Nadu assembly elections 2026. According to the statement, the elections will be held in one phase on April 23, 2026. In a press conference, EC has announced schedule for Assembly elections in Assam, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, West Bengal and Puducherry.

The Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly has a total of 234 elected seats. As per the schedule, the counting of votes will be done on May 4, 2026.

In 2021, the impressive performance of the DMK-led coalition led M.K. Stalin to become Chief Minister for the first time. The DMK-led coalition managed a strong victory over the AIADMK-led coalition by winning 159 of the 234 seats.

Ahead of the elections, several parties are engaged in alliance or seat sharing talks. Congress and DMK had also reached a seat-sharing arrangement where the former will contest 28 Assembly constituencies and will be allocated one seat in the upcoming Rajya Sabha elections.

Meanwhile, AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami on Thursday denied holding alliance talks with actor-politician Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), stating that no such discussions have taken place and the media is spreading speculation.

“The upcoming election is a Tamil Nadu Assembly election, where AIADMK is the principal opposition. The AIADMK government had delivered a ‘golden period of governance,’ and Stalin makes such remarks because he cannot directly confront AIADMK politically,” Palaniswami said.
