Chennai: Tamil Nadu chief minister C Joseph Vijay on Monday announced a series of welfare programmes in the state assembly, building on his electoral promises.

Vijay unveiled a scheme to provide free LPG cylinders for eligible families and expanded the free bus travel for women, while also extending the travel benefits to transgender persons.

Under the new ‘Annapoorani Super Six‘ scheme, eligible families will receive the cost of three LPG cylinders every year, with the amount directly credited to bank accounts. The scheme will be launched during Pongal 2027 and is expected to benefit around 13 million families. Families with an annual income of up to ₹2.5 lakh will be covered under the scheme, which is estimated to cost the state ₹4,000 cr a year.

Vijay announced an expansion of the state’s free bus travel scheme for women. Women will now be able to travel for free on express, limited stop and deluxe government buses.
