Surat: A 38-year-old tailor was stabbed to death at a garment unit in Puna on Friday after a quarrel with a co-worker, police said, adding that the dispute was triggered by the accused seeking the victim’s daughter’s phone number.Mohammad Chand (38), a native of West Bengal, worked at a garment unit in Puna. Police said that on Friday morning, while Chand was at work, his co-worker Musharraf Shaikh (21) attacked him with a pair of scissors, inflicting injuries to his neck and back. Chand died on the spot due to heavy blood loss.Investigators said Shaikh had called Chand’s wife, Aladi Begam, in West Bengal earlier on Friday. During the call, Shaikh allegedly asked for the mobile number of her daughter, saying he wanted to speak to her. Police said Shaikh would frequently call Begam and insist on speaking to her daughter, prompting her to complain to Chand that morning.After the complaint, an argument broke out between the two men at the unit during which Shaikh allegedly stabbed Chand multiple times with the scissors. Police said Shaikh also injured himself in the chest.Chand succumbed to his injuries at the unit. Shaikh was shifted to hospital and is reported to be in a stable condition. Puna police registered a case of murder and said Shaikh will be detained once he recovers.BOX:Man arrested for murdering grandmotherIn a separate incident, Puna police arrested a 23-year-old man, Harsh Patel, for allegedly murdering his maternal grandmother, Leela Chaudhary (68).Police said Patel and his sister were raised by Chaudhary after their mother, Meenakshi Kanabar (42), married another man about 10 years ago. Patel, who was married, lived with Chaudhary along with his wife and sister.On Thursday evening, when Patel and Chaudhary were alone at home, he allegedly stabbed her in the throat, killing her. Police said Chaudhary often scolded Patel over his joblessness and urged him to earn a livelihood, which he resented.Investigators said Patel initially tried to portray the death as a suicide, but the police probe established that it was a case of murder.
